On September 27, 2024, the final day of CICR’s TPN2 training marked an extraordinary milestone for our participants. After five days of intensive learning on facilitating groups in conflict, the participants put their newfound skills into action by organizing and facilitating a Community Dialogue on Mental Health between twelve guests from different backgrounds! This event was more than just a practical exercise—it was a testament to the power of collaboration, community, and conflict resolution.

A Final Project Turned Real-World Practice

This wasn’t just another classroom activity. The Community Dialogue served as the "final project" for TPN2, where participants had to embody everything they had learned throughout the week. They took charge of the event from start to finish—organizing the venue, inviting the guests, adjusting the setup, assigning roles, and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment. Every detail, down to the flipcharts and seating arrangements, was handled with care and precision, showcasing their ability to facilitate meaningful group discussions.

Facilitating A Dialogue on Mental Health

The dialogue itself centered around a critical issue: mental health. In small groups, participants led discussions using a range of facilitation techniques—from ice-breaking activities to brainstorming sessions. Their goal was to create a space where everyone felt comfortable contributing, ultimately guiding the group towards consensus. It was a powerful demonstration of how skilled facilitation can bring diverse voices together to address important societal challenges.

From Theory to Impact

What made this event truly special was watching the TPN2 participants transform theory into practice. They applied conflict resolution techniques in real-time, creating a platform for thoughtful and constructive dialogue. As they clarified the mandate and guided discussions, they exhibited the confidence and skill of seasoned facilitators—an inspiring sight for all in attendance, as they were successful in honouring all TPN principles.

A Celebratory Conclusion

After hours of rich conversation and learning, the event concluded with a well-deserved communal lunch in the CICR facilities. This meal wasn’t just about sharing food; it was about continuing the dialogue in a more informal setting, where participants could connect on a deeper level. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, as the TPN2 facilitators and attendees alike reflected on the meaningful discussions they had just experienced.

A Job Well Done

For the TPN2 participants, this Community Dialogue wasn’t just the culmination of five days of learning—it was the beginning of their journey as skilled facilitators. By bringing together community members and creating a space for open dialogue on mental health, they demonstrated the incredible impact that conflict resolution training can have in the real world.

We are incredibly proud of our TPN2 graduates and look forward to seeing the ripple effects of their work in the communities they serve. Stay tuned for more events where our participants will continue to put their skills into action.

Bringing people from different backgrounds together to openly discuss mental health shows how powerful facilitated dialogue can be in building trust and understanding. Whether social or health-related - benefit from thoughtful, human-centered approaches. In healthcare, for example, many now explore sleep apnea treatment options that focus on collaboration between patients and professionals, rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.

I found the dialogue’s focus on open conversation and shared responsibility around mental health really meaningful. When communities create space for honest discussion, it becomes easier to move from awareness to real action. I believe these conversations should also connect people to structured care, especially when mental health challenges overlap with substance use. Early support, professional therapy, and a safe environment can change outcomes dramatically. That’s why integrated treatment settings that include medically supervised drug detox, counselling, and long-term recovery planning feel so essential. When dialogue leads people toward proper treatment and continued support, it stops being symbolic and starts making a real difference.
