Both facilitation and mediation involve an intervention by the third, neutral person (party) that has no decision making authority in the issue. Both processes are lead with full respect to the third party neutral role, which is basically to direct the process and encourage the participation of everyone involved.  This will assist them to move forward in making decisions about  their dispute, or in groups setting, about their issues.

Mediation involves the intervention between the two or more parties in dispute, while facilitation is an intervention aiming to help a group of people to improve the way it identifies and solves problems and makes decisions so the groups effectiveness increases. Such groups of people may or may not be in conflict.
