Introduction to the Enneagram Personality System as a Tool for Self-Awareness in Interpersonal Relationships and Conflict Intervention

The Enneagram Personality System combines wisdom traditions with modern psychology to illuminate how different people interpret and deal with their experience. As recognized by Harvard Law School’s ‘Negotiation Insights Initiative’, the Enneagram is a sophisticated lens for understanding our own and others’ motivations, beliefs, habitual strategies and patterns, including identity-based conflict triggers and responses.

This course consists of a 3-day workshop plus a subsequent 2-hour individual coaching session.

The course is for third party neutrals, conflict practitioners, managers, consultants and counselors. Using lecturettes, video examples, discussion exercises, individual coaching and self-reflection processes, the course will enable participants to identify:

  • The basic characteristics of the nine Enneagram personality types / points of view, including ways these can change in times of stress and security;
  • Their own Enneagram type and how it can impact their perceptions and behaviour in interpersonal situations, including those where they seek to play a third party neutral role;
  • The universal concepts of personality, diversity, consciousness and change represented in the Enneagram System;
  • Ways the Enneagram can be used to support personal development, interpersonal effectiveness and identity-based conflict resolution.

Using the Enneagram as a Tool for Understanding and Working with Identity-Based Conflict

This course is for third party neutrals, conflict practitioners, consultants and managers who are familiar with the basics of the Enneagram System and wish to use it as a tool for recognizing identity-based patterns in interpersonal conflict and for selecting interventions for use in resolving the conflict.

Prerequisite: Completion of the “Introduction to the Enneagram Personality System as a Tool for Self-Awareness in Interpersonal Relationships and Conflict Intervention” workshop or of an equivalent workshop approved by the trainer. Participants will be asked to share and discuss their own Enneagram type and real life situations.

This 3-day workshop will use interviews, role plays, lecturettes and exercises to enable participants to:

  • Deepen their capacity to recognize and understand the conflict triggers and behaviours often characteristic of people of the different Enneagram types;
  • Apply the Enneagram lens to interpersonal conflict situations to identify personality patterns that may be present and to define intervention approaches for working with the individuals involved;
  • Practice staying grounded and present in listening, questioning and facilitating as third parties so that the conflict resolution process is truly not about their personality;
  • Understand several ways the Enneagram tool might be used as a positively centered exercise in conflict resolution.
