Course Introduction

This training program is designed for Informal Conflict Management System (ICMS) practitioners, facilitators, human resource, organizational development, and conflict resolution specialists who want to enhance their skills, knowledge and abilities for conducting successful group interventions for workplace conflict. Group interventions will be explored with emphasis on: group dynamics; paradoxes in group life; the process of change and theories; and practice in conflict resolution. As a practitioner you will come out of the training program with a better understanding of self, including how you deal with issues such as uncertainty, resistance and ethical dilemmas.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training program, you will:

1)Have explored and practiced a new workplace conflict group intervention model including the      preparation, intervention and evaluation stages;

2)Be able to deal effectively with complex emotions that arise in groups especially when your own sense of meaning and connectedness are triggered;

3)Be able to determine when to conduct group interventions and when not to — and when to suggest Organizational Development (OD) instead of conflict resolution;

4)Have reviewed the basic principles, values and ethics, processes and conflict theories relevant to conduct group interventions;

5)Be able to deal with difficult behaviours such as — sabotage, intimidation, bullying, coalitions in groups and health issues — with respect and dignity;

6)Have strengthened your ability in using conflict diagnostic tools prior, during and after group intervention;

8)Have learned about the experiential learning cycle in order to manage your own style and to re-integrate the cycle for each step of the group intervention model;

9)Be able to anticipate and include sources of resistance and paradoxes in the making of personal and collective meaning;

10)Have a deeper awareness of various aspects of group life, such as cultural diversity and intergeneration challenges, to recognize each individual’s uniqueness and connectedness to the group.
