Advanced Mediation
Leading an Intentional Mediation Process
This workshop is designed for conflict resolution practitioners who wish to enhance their skills, knowledge and way of being in mediation. Complex mediations will be explored with a significant emphasis on multiparty negotiations involving various representatives such as union rep, staff relations officers, lawyers, etc. Cultural diversity will also be honoured and observed as an important learning component in this workshop.
Learning Process: It is meant to be both reflexive and practical. The experiential approach is core to the learning strategy.
Learning Goals:
- Explore and practice multiparty negotiations
- Review the basic mediation principles and processes to develop a deeper understanding of effective conflict management system
- Provide advanced skill-based and experiential learning in complex mediations
- Understand the human identity needs model and learn how to deal effectively with complex emotions that arise at the table
- Explore ways to deal with difficult behaviours such as sabotage and bullying
- Understand the power of mimetic desire involved in a multiparty negotiation
- Practice the skill of using metaphors to evoke common vision and peace, honouring grief as well as diffusing highly emotional behaviours
- Convening parties for a mediation; getting genuine buy-in
- Develop trust within one-self to deal with the unknown and changes required in complex cases
- When to mediate; when not to mediate. Determine the relevance of mediation versus other ADR approaches
Learning Tools:
- Receive constructive feedback to enhance participants’ advanced mediation skills
- Use a self-assessment tool to measure personal progress.
